Les attentats du 11 septembre

Ce jour là, quatre avions ont été détournés. Deux se sont écrasés sur les tours du World Trade Center, causant ainsi leur effondrement. Un autre s'est écrasé sur le Pentagone qui est le QG du département de la défense américaine et  le dernier s'est écrasé à Shanksvill en Pennsylvanie.

Le mémorial

Au total, 2992 personnes seraient mortes dans ces attentats même si le mémorial n'a recensé "que" 2977 victimes. C'est aussi le mémorial des attentats de 1993 où une voiture a explosé au pied de la tour nord du World Trade Center et qui a fait 6 morts. Il remplace le mémorial qui se trouvait au pied de la tour nord et qui a été détruit durant l'attentat du 11 novembre. Le mémorial a été conçu en grande partie par l'architecte Michael Arad malgré le fait que son projet a été qualifié d'austère puisqu'il n'y avait que du bâtiment. Un paysagiste, Peter Walker, s'est donc occupé d'ajouter des arbres afin "d'adoucir" l'ensemble.Les noms des victimes sont ainsi inscrites tout autour des deux carrés d'eau, qui représentent les tours effondrées. Ils sont classés selon le lieu où elles se trouvaient au moment de leur décès.

L'arbre de Ground Zero

Dans le parc se trouve un poirier qui a survécu aux attaques du 11 septembre. Il a été retrouvé sur les lieux très abîmé, mais a été déplacé vers un centre de New York pour être soigné. Il fut replanté dans le Ground Zero en 2010. Cet arbre deviendra le symbole de la “renaissance” des Etats-Unis après ces attaques terroristes.

The 9/11 terrorists attack  

On that day, four planes were hijacked. Two of them crashed into the towers of the World Trade Center, causing their collapse. Another one crashed into the Pentagon, the headquarters of the Department of Defense. The last one crashed near the town of Shanksville, in Pennsylvania.

The memorial 

 2992 people died during that day, because of these attacks, even if the Memorial “only” counts 2977 victims. That’s also the memorial of 1993 attacks, where a car blew up at the ground of the North Tower of the WTC, and where 6 peoples died. It replace a memorial that was where the attack were before its destruction during the 2001 attacks. Memorial were conceived, from a large part, by the architect Michael Arad. But the project was qualified austere because there was only concrete. A landscaper, Peter Walker, added some trees to soften the place.The victims names are written around two squares, where inside is a waterfall, which represented the towers of the WTC. They are classified according to the place where they were at the moment of their death.

 

The Survivor Tree

We can find in the memorial a symbol of these attacks, the Survivor Tree. It’s a tree, found very damaged in the rubble of the towers. New York City Department of Parks and Recreation took care of it. He came back on the Ground Zero in 2010. This tree is the symbol of the “rebirth” of the United States after these terrorists attacks.
